Intermountain Health digital transformation.

Problem

With four healthcare systems merging and outdated digital platforms, Intermountain Health needed a complete overhaul. Their website was sprawling, difficult to navigate, and lacked accessibility features to meet the needs of a diverse audience.

Solution
Through extensive UX research and testing, we developed personas and user journeys that prioritized caregivers and patients with chronic conditions. We conducted card sorting, tree testing, and usability testing to refine navigation and create a more intuitive user experience. This led to the creation of a dynamic design system focused on accessibility and scalability, ensuring inclusivity for all users, including seniors and LGBTQ+ groups.

Process

Role

As  a ux designer and  the Accessibility Consultant, I created design focusing on creating accessible and user-friendly interfaces. I worked closely with the design team to develop a design system that incorporated accessibility standards, ensuring consistency across platforms. I also collaborated with content strategists to optimize high-traffic areas like primary care and women’s health.

Provided art direction and design guidance to interns to ensure cohesion of digital identity, accessibility standards, and design principles

Creative Direction

Testing our hypotheses

During the creative and UI phases, we worked closely with FutureBrand as Intermountain Health’s new branding was being finalized. We had a logo, color palette, and initial photography references that represented the refreshed brand.

In our first round of testing, we explored four creative approaches:

  • Guiding Journey: Highlighting healthcare as a personalized experience tailored to each individual’s unique health journey.
  • Trusted Partnership: Emphasizing trust and strong relationships to position Intermountain Health as the provider of choice.
  • Expanding Heritage: Showcasing innovation and high-quality care, building on a long-standing tradition of excellence.
  • Urgency: Encouraging a fresh approach to healthcare, focusing on making it accessible, affordable, and patient-centric.

Project Outcome

The redesigned website improved engagement, streamlined navigation, and provided personalized experiences for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals. The accessibility enhancements ensured that all users could easily access and interact with the site’s features.
